“What do you say, Flores?”
And he called me by my last name, like I was one of his soccer buddies or
something.
I cleared my throat.
“I appreciate the invitation,” I began, with my fancy interview voice still
intact.
I’d just come back from one. It had been disastrous- starting with the fact
that I knocked over the boss’s coffee when I leaned over to shake her hand.
But Niko didn’t know that.
According to him, I was the same Elea Flores that was at the top of our
senior class and could get any internship in the city. Put together.
Organised. Smart. He hadn’t seen me since graduation, which was nearly
six years ago. He didn’t know I slept in an apartment with two maniacs and
worked in a pizzeria to make rent.
“I guess I just don’t understand why you’re asking me,” I said. “We
weren’t really friends. And aren’t you dating Lucy?”
His relaxed face went cold, and I regretted the question.
Obviously, he wasn’t.
“Sorry,” I blurted.
He shook his head.
He was still drumming on the table.
“No sweat. Lucy and I broke it off a month ago.” He scanned my face.
“You didn’t see all her posts about healing from toxic relationships?”
His voice was dry, even a little amused.
“No,” I said. “To be honest I don’t spend that much time on social
media.
He nodded.
“Me neither. It’s a bummer.”
There was a pause.
He cleared his throat.
“I don’t know anyone else our age that’s currently…unattached.”
“Uh huh,” I said slowly. “You can just say single.”
