I AWAKEN YET again, my sheets soaked with sweat, my body on fire.
The nightmares seem never-ending anymore.
I feel like I am going insane.
Maybe I am insane.
Seriously, get it together, Kali.
Breathing heavily, I peel off the black plush comforter that is currently
plastered to my burning skin, letting the cool night air caress my heated
flesh.

--- --- --- --- ---
My heart is still pounding in my chest as my brain decides to do an
instant replay of the same nightmare that’s been haunting me every night
since I was six years old.
The creatures.
My mother’s death.
My entire life I’ve had so many people tell me it’s just my mind playing
tricks on me.
That a crazed man attacked her and the trauma of watching her murder
twisted my memory of what really happened that night.
They say that the monsters I saw weren’t real and it was all in my head.
For me though, it always feels real.
It always hurts the same no matter how they say it happened, and I still
see the same thing every night.
Something is wrong with me, and I wish I could just be fixed, but I
don’t think anyone will ever be able to fix my messed up mind.
A strand of my long, dark hair brushes the small of my back making a
shiver run down the length of my spine, making me realize that I’m still
sitting in a pool of my own sweat and tears.
With sleep still crusted in my eyes I crawl out of the comfort of my bed
and shuffle over to the white sand bleached dresser in the corner of my
room. Opening the top drawer, I grab fresh sheets and the adorable crescent
moon cami and shorts set I ordered last week. The floor is cold against my
bare feet as I cross the room heading to the bathroom.
Out of the corner of my eye I catch a glimpse of myself walking past the
mirror, unprepared to see the woman staring back at me.
Dark lines etch spiderweb-like patterns from both my eyes, the whites
of them an inky black.
Shaking my head, I squeeze my eyes shut, then slowly open one, before
opening the other.
Of course, now I look perfectly normal.
Just another trick my mind is playing on me.
I shed my sweat-soaked clothes and walk over to the shower, twisting
the knob until it’s mainly on the hot water side and climb in.
Scorching hot droplets of water run down my shoulders, relieving some
of the wretched tension living there.
After a thorough wash, I turn off the water and reach for my towel.
“Of course, the one thing I didn’t grab,” I mutter angrily to myself.
Stepping out into the chilly air, my nipples instantly become small
beads of steel.
I run towards the towel closet and slip, falling smack dab onto my bare
ass.
