Fleur slowed her pace and gazed down the row of mismatched
buildings. A clear blue sky stretched out above her, broken only by
the slightest white tufts of cloud, while spring blossoms burst into colour in
the green patches of land that were dotted in front of the Church and Visitor
Centre. On a day like today, it was easy to see why Maldon had stolen her
heart so easily.

--- --- --- --- ---
There was something about the irregularity of the shops that
made it so endearing, from the pink walls of Mrs Salisbury’s Tea rooms to
the dark-stone brickwork and balcony of Moot Hall. Sometimes, the whole
town seemed so new and intriguing, it felt impossible to believe she’d moved
there almost two months ago. At other times, it was like she’d been born
there.
Smiling to herself, she continued her walk up the High Street, only to stop
again as she felt her phone buzz in her bag. For a second, she stared at the
name on the screen and her hand hovered above the green telephone symbol,
but then she changed her mind and hung up instead. She would speak to her
later.
Ever the overbearing older sister, Annelise had been ringing constantly,
trying to persuade her to throw an over-the-top birthday bash on her
encroaching, big four-zero. No matter how much Fleur insisted it wasn’t what
she wanted, Annelise would not drop the subject. Given what a wonderfully
relaxed day Fleur had spent so far, the last thing she wanted was her good
mood ruined by her sister’s well-meaning but constant badgering.
After dropping her phone back into her bag, she continued towards the
last of the morning’s errands, picking up her prescription from the pharmacy.
Wanting to get in and out as quickly as possible, she hurried to the back of
the long and narrow shop, only to stop before she reached the counter.
“This is disgusting. You understand that? An absolute farce. I want to
speak to your line manager. Now.”
