Seth Clinkinbeard squinted against the glare of the Texas sun, its heat
already merciless in the early hours. He stood atop a gentle rise, hands
perched on his hips, surveying the bustling activity below. Men moved like
clockwork among the cattle, their shouts and the bawling of steers stitching
together the soundscape of the ranch. Seth nodded in quiet approval.
He wiped a bead of sweat from his brow with the back of a hand that
had known countless callouses. The Stetson he wore cast a shadow over
sharp eyes that missed nothing—a stray calf, a fence needing mending, or a
hand slacking off. His face bore the brunt of the elements, etching lines of
determination around his mouth and eyes.
As he descended toward the heart of the ranch, the fabric of his shirt
clung to him. With every step, dust rose to cling to his pants and mingle
with the sweat on his skin. But none of that mattered to Seth. His focus lay
solely on the land stretching out before him—land he’d turn into the most
prosperous ranch this side of Fort Worth.
Seth strode along the edge of a newly fenced pasture, his keen eyes
scanning the horizon where his cattle grazed under the Texas sun. A group
of ranch hands worked nearby, driving posts into the parched earth. He
approached them, the rhythmic thud of mallets against wood punctuating
each step.
“Looks sturdy,” Seth called out.
“Thanks, boss. Just following your diagram,” replied Jack, a young
hand.
“Let’s double-check those knots on the top wire,” Seth suggested,
pointing toward the end of the line. “We don’t want any surprises come
round-up.”
“Got it, Seth,” another hand chimed in, already making his way over to
tighten the loops.
“Good work today, boys. Keep an eye on that western patch though,”
Seth added, wiping his brow. “I think we’ll need to rotate the herd come
next week. The grass is wearing thin.”
“Will do, boss!” Jack said.
As Seth continued his walk toward the barn, he spotted David leaning
on the corral, watching a chestnut mare trot in circles. David was his closest
neighbor, and their houses were close, though their ranches were vast. The
horse kicked up dust that danced in the light breeze, and a smile tugged at
Seth’s lips. David had a way with animals that Seth could only admire.
“Fine day for training, isn’t it?” Seth greeted, joining his friend by the
fence.
“Gets better with every sunrise,” David replied, pushing his hat back.
“You’ve built a fortress here, but you forgot something important.”
“What’s that?” Seth quirked an eyebrow, his hands resting on the
weathered wood.
“A wife, Seth. This land needs a woman’s touch, and you need an heir.”
David’s voice held a note of gentle prodding.
“An heir, huh?” Seth mused, his gaze drifting across the fields. “There’s
truth to that. But a wife requires finding the right one—someone who
understands this life.”
“Maybe she’s closer than you think. Could be you just need to open
your eyes to the possibilities,” David said, a knowing look crossing his
features.
