Nothing had been the same since her brother Will was hanged.
A month ago, her eldest brother Simon had become unhinged by the
harrowing event. That was the only way she could put it. Simon had raged
in his grief. Fury caused him to lash out at every possible moment. No one
was safe around him—not her other brothers and certainly not Tess.
Tess had quickly learned how to stay away from his whiskey-infused
wrath. Smuggling had been paused. Usually, she and her brothers were out
several times a month on their ship, heading over to France to bring back
brandy and other goods, but not now. Not since Will’s demise.

Simon hated himself. Something had cracked inside his massive frame.
A wound had opened up in her brawny older brother, and it had stolen his
compassion and his kindness.
Oh, he had always been hard. To be a smuggler and to grow up crossing
the Channel, one had to be, but this was a different sort of hardness.
He was warped by guilt.
Simon kept insisting that he should have done a better job, that he
should have protected their little brother. Perhaps Simon was correct, but
nothing could stop the excisemen from taking Will.
Nothing could have stopped them from ambushing Will on that road a
month ago, and certainly nothing could stop their vengeful need for justice
against the smugglers who so often outwitted them.
It had seemed a disproportionate sentence, execution for smuggling, but
that was the way of things. Stealing led to death in Merry Old England. It
was how it had always been, and no doubt it was how it would always be.
Still, she hated it. And her own heart had broken as jolly Will, who
loved the lasses and was always singing, had been the one they’d taken and
strung up.
As she sneaked across the Devon landscape, following her brothers in
the darkness, she swallowed back her fears. They were up to something.
Something dangerous. It certainly wasn’t smuggling. She was part of all
that. She had been going on their ships for years. She was never left behind.
No, her brothers always took her with them down to the coast. She’d spent
many a happy night slipping onto their vessels and heading out into the
Channel to bring back goods that regular people could not afford.
Tonight? Tonight, there had been an altogether different look on her
brother Simon’s weathered face, and on her other brothers’ faces too. They
had followed him like soldiers following their commander into war.
Whatever they were up to was going to change everything.
She knew it in her bones, and so she’d followed them quietly.
They had left her behind, and it had been jarring. It told her that, this
night, they could not bear to tell her the truth. They were going to do
something shameful. It was the only thing she could think of. The only
reason why they would not include her.
She kept herself back far enough that she could follow them without
being noticed under the black skies, and soon she realized exactly where
they were going.
