FALLON STOOD in front of Timeless Toys, waiting for the doors
to open, along with what seemed like thousands of other people. It was Black
Friday, and the city was already decorated for Christmas with wreaths and
red bows as far as the eye could see. Crisp, cool air nipped at her nose, and
Fallon couldn’t wait to get back home to her warm apartment.
She shook her head and glanced at her watch. Only five more minutes,
then she could get in there, get the doll, and get out. She rubbed her ice-cold
hands together and zipped up her puffy coat. If she didn’t love her best
friend, Jane, and her daughter, Kiki, so much, there’d be no way she would
offer to spend her day off work in line at a toy shop at the butt crack of dawn
to purchase a damn doll.

Jane was home taking care of three sick kids and her husband, Ryan, was out of town on business. Kiki was crazy about the RazzleDazzles, a children’s TV show about some adorable superheroes who happened to be household pets who fought crime by night when their owners were asleep. How did Fallon know all of that? Because every time she babysat Kiki, it was all the little girl talked about. And according to Jane, if Kiki didn’t get a Twinkletoes doll, the most popular RazzleDazzle, all hell would break loose on Christmas Eve. Feeling a familiar buzz coming from her purse, Fallon retrieved her cell phone and read a text message from Jane. Do they have it?
By the way, you’re an angel! Fallon sighed and tapped out a reply. Chill, I’ve got this, babe you owe me! She put her phone away as an already weary-looking elf flung the doors wide and promptly got out of the way to avoid being trampled to death as people rushed inside. Fallon moved forward with the crowd, part of one single-minded bargain-hunting entity intent on finding the best gifts at the cheapest prices. People pushed and shoved their way into the store, elbowing others out of the way.
Fallon nearly fell before catching herself on the arm of a nearby shopper. “Oh, I’m so sorry, I—” The bluest eyes she’d ever seen stared back at her, crinkling as he smiled. They were attached to one of the most attractive men Fallon had ever met. She took in his tall stature, muscular build, and dark blonde curls before hastily looking away. He helped her steady herself as others rushed past them into the fluorescent hell of the toy shop.
“No problem at all.” He winked and gave her a lingering look before
heading inside with the others.
Right. It was time to focus, not ogle some stranger’s gorgeous eyes. Get
in, find Twinkletoes, get out. That was the mission.
Once inside, Fallon wasn’t sure where to look for the dolls. She roamed
up and down aisles, searching for any sign of the furry purple cat doll or a
store employee who she could ask for help, but saw neither.
Finally, just when she was about to give up and return to her warm, cozy
bed, Fallon spotted it.
