“Promenade!”
Lord Felix Brightman, Earl of Enderley, was not given to following
commands. After all, as one of the most powerful men in the land, he was
not required to do so.

--- --- --- --- ---
Yet, when Signore Antonio Morelli said promenade, Felix promenaded.
The Italian fellow was the most sought-after and excellent dance
instructor in all of London.
Perhaps all of Europe.
Mamas queued by the hordes to secure Morelli’s teachings for their
daughters, but it was also important for the gentlemen to learn to dance.
And so he and his good friend, the Duke of Tynemore, promenaded up
and down the long hall.
“Turn the leg out, Your Grace,” commanded Signore Morelli from his
position near the windows, rhythmically pounding his gold-headed cane
into the waxed wood floor. The confident and rather intimidating instructor
was dressed with aplomb. His clothes were bright and colorful. His hair was
arranged in curls that were meant to look effortless but likely had taken
hours.
He looked to be an effervescent butterfly ready to take flight. But with the
iron determination of an eagle determined that his pupils soar. In time to the
music.
In Felix’s opinion, dancing was one of the most important skills a
gentleman could have. Like so much of the world, he believed in the power
of a Renaissance man. Or at the very least, one of the Enlightenment.
Yes, he believed that such a man should be able to skewer a man with a
blade and turn a lady gracefully under his arm. Why choose one thing? he
always reminded himself.
It was no boon to just be able to wield a well-primed pistol. No, one
needed a sharp mind and the capability to navigate a room with one’s
physique.
Tynemore gamboled gracefully beside him.
His Grace was, well, graceful.
Though Tynemore hated every moment at present because His Grace was
accustomed to dancing with his wife, the duchess. But said duchess had
perished not long ago.
Despite his grief, the powerful duke understood that going to balls and
attending affairs was important.
Balls were the sort of events that kept society going.
People thought society was run by the House of Lords and Horse Guards.
It wasn’t.
It was run in the beautiful appointed drawing rooms and ballrooms of the
ton both in town and country. And if one was going to maneuver the
outcomes of fate, one needed to have a well-turned-out foot and be able to
count to music.
Signore Morelli could assure both things.
“One, two, three, four, turn!” Morelli bellowed and continued pounding
his cane upon the floor.
Even with the vigorous instruction and the notes of the violinist playing
the most fashionable tune, Felix could not stop his thoughts from skittering
to the letter that he had received this morning from his land agent, Mr.
Bilby, in the country.
Bilby was a gentleman, or at least so Felix had been led to believe when
he hired the man.
That was how Bilby had presented himself when Felix bought the house
in Cornwall, with the fantasy that he would take time away from Horse
Guards to go and relax by the sea. He never relaxed, though. He was always
at Horse Guards or attending fetes, which would support his needs as an
earl and man in government.
