Helena Westwood laughed as she followed a few of the girls she worked
with at Lady Constance’s House of Reform from the sweetshop. In the past
few months that she’d been working as an instructor for Lady Constance,
she’d found a contentment she hadn’t known since she’d turned eighteen.
She still couldn’t believe her luck in finding the flyer for respectable
employment so soon after escaping to London. And, with Lady Constance’s
propensity for helping people, the woman respected secrets. As such,
Helena was able to keep her background a mystery to everyone. She had
managed to escape and bask in anonymity.
“I daresay that was the best treat they have ever served,” Sarah
proclaimed.

Mandy giggled. “And, watching Lord Havens enjoy the same chocolate
confection from across the room only added to the experience.”
“Mandy!” Judith exclaimed, clearly scandalized. “You shouldn’t talk like
that.”
“Then, I will,” Helena inserted. “The noises that man was making surely
helped the confectioner to sell out of the decadent dessert today.”
Always the proper one, Sarah cleared her throat. “That may be, but it’s
not for us to say.”
Helena rolled her eyes. Years ago she’d found speaking her mind was far
superior to remaining meek and helpless. After spending most of her life as
an obedient daughter who solely depended on others to care for her, this
new person she’d become was much more freeing. Not to mention, more to
her liking.
After that comment, Mandy fell in step beside Helena. “Have you ever
wondered what it would be like to be with a man?”
At the whispered question of the girl who couldn’t have been over
eighteen, Helena bit her lip. “Never. Men are ghastly. They either keep you
weak to control you, or they paw at you like your protestations are meant as
a jest. The whole lot of them are worthless.”
“I’m sorry I asked.” Mandy dropped her head as she looked the other
direction.
“Don’t be.” Helena infused her voice with cheeriness. “It’s safe to think
about them from afar just as long as you know the truth on the inside.”
“You know all men aren’t like that, right? My mother and father are quite
happy together. He doesn’t do all of those horrible things.”
“Your mother is lucky.” Helena shrugged. “Some women are.”
The remainder of their walk back to the House of Reform, Mandy didn’t
bring up the subject again, which put Helena more at ease. Perhaps it was
better to keep those types of comments to herself, but sometimes she
couldn’t contain herself. If Mandy held on to the fanciful notions about men
as did the majority of the House of Reform’s clients, the girl would find
herself hurt. Helena had firsthand knowledge of that.
