A braxas had flown over these seas before. Long ago, when he was but
a child, his mother had told him they needed to seek a new land.
Though his memory was hazy of that time. It felt like another lifetime
when he could remember his mother’s face, the sound of her voice, the silk
of her hair. But he’d never forgotten her fear as they flew over the rolling
seas. How she’d watched for storms that would ground them, and sought
shelter on a tiny island where she had been pleased to find enough food for
them to hunt.

--- --- --- --- ---
That was where he took his children.
The island was a long flight from Umbra, and it was made even harder
by carrying two baby dragons the size of horses in metal cages that added
even more weight to their forms. And perhaps it was harder because his
heart broke into a thousand pieces with every beat of his wings.
Lore.
Her name whispered through his mind, even though he didn’t want to
remember what had happened. Her soul called out to him from the great
beyond, but he knew he couldn’t follow her. Not yet, at least. Soon.
Abraxas tilted his wings and circled a large, nebulous cloud that he’d
learned long ago would send him higher into the air than he wished. He
rode the wind as a captain rode the seas, and he knew the air was a fickle
beast. It required his attention, and so he pushed thoughts of her out of his
mind.
His fracturing mind, that was. He’d known the mate bond when he felt
it. Lore had wiggled her way underneath his guard and that meant she was
so much more to him than just a woman he loved. His soul needed hers to
ground him.
What was it that his mother had said? Crimson dragons required more
help than other dragons. Their mates were more important because they
were the ones who held the key to their massive amount of strength and
deadly abilities. She’d told him that right before she lost her own mind. He
still remembered her wild screams and how three other dragons had been
required to pin her down. They’d gotten her back, but not for much longer.
Abraxas had been alone for such a long time, and now he wasn’t.
He
had children to care for. He’d promised Lore that he would care for them.
But then his mind splintered and he could almost feel her on his back.
Her thighs holding on so tight and her hands gripping onto his spines. Great
heights terrified her, and though she loved to ride through the clouds, he
knew he couldn’t bank as hard as he had or she’d scream. Although,
sometimes he enjoyed hearing her scream.
