LENNON
HUH. Well, this tracks, I thought to myself as I stood on the side of the
road with my hands on my hips, staring down at my blown tire. It figured
something like this would happen, like karma had just been waiting to kick
me while I was down. A giant FU from the universe for something I must
have done in a past life.

--- --- --- --- ---
My fingers curled, creating white-knuckled fists as I struggled to stuff
down the frustrated scream trying to claw its way up my throat. I wanted to
throw my middle fingers in the air and rage at whatever higher power was
currently using me as their own personal punching bag, not that it would
have done me any good. I still would have been right where I was, flat tire
and all.
It wasn’t that I didn’t know how to change a tire; my father insisted I
had to learn before I ever got my license. The problem was that all of my
belongings, everything I had to my name, was crammed into my car, taking
up every bit of free space I had, so getting to the spare was going to be a
nightmare.
Heaving a sigh, I pressed the button on my key fob to open the liftgate
as I pulled the phone from my back pocket and scrolled to the name I’d
stored in my contacts weeks ago.
The call connected on the second ring. “Hi, Iris. It’s Lennon.”
My realtor’s smiling voice came through the line as I tucked the phone
between my ear and shoulder and started pulling my stuff out of the back
hatch, lining it carefully along the side of the road so I could get to the spare
in the back.
“Hey! How are you? You almost here?”
I pushed a breath out through my nose and closed my eyes, struggling to
find my calm and keep a tight grasp on it.
“Well . . . almost. I’m just calling to tell you I’m going to be a little late
meeting you at the house. I’m really sorry.” My sentence ended on a grunt
as the particularly heavy suitcase I’d just tugged on tumbled from the back
of my car. “Son of a bitch,” I hissed, nearly dropping my phone as I jumped
back to avoid my toes being squished.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, sorry.” I pursed my lips and blew at a strand of hair that had
fallen into my eyes. “I made it to town, but I got a flat tire. Now I’m stuck
on the side of the road in . . .” I lifted my head and turned in a slow circle,
taking in my surroundings as I raked a hand through my hair, “the middle of
freaking nowhere.”
It was definitely going to take a bit of time for me to acclimate to my
new environment. I’d been a city girl my whole life, so used to big-box
stores, a Starbucks on every corner, fast-food chains, and malls. But that
wasn’t my life anymore.
I’d taken the first job offer to teach middle school English that came my
way after my divorce had finalized, the farther from the world I was leaving
behind, the better.
